A recent study published in the journal Telematics and Informatics suggests that college students are increasingly dependent on artificial intelligence tools, driven heavily by a fear of falling behind their classmates. This dependence tends to create a psychological tug of war, resulting in severe anxiety when the technology is unavailable alongside a deep fear of being judged for using it. These findings provide evidence that universities need to establish specific guidelines to help students navigate the mental stress of using artificial intelligence in their coursework.
The integration of artificial intelligence into higher education is happening at a rapid pace. Between 80 and 90 percent of college students currently use generative artificial intelligence tools, such as ChatGPT, to draft essays, summarize readings, and search for information. Generative artificial intelligence refers to computer systems that can create new text, images, or code based on patterns they have learned from vast amounts of data.
Despite this widespread adoption, many universities have not yet established consistent rules regarding how these tools should be used. This lack of policy leaves students guessing about where the boundary is drawn between acceptable assistance and academic dishonesty. The ambiguity can lead to stress as students try to figure out what instructors consider to be fair play.
“Since spring 2023, we have noticed a significant gap between student behaviors and institutional policies,” said Chunsik Lee, an associate professor of communication at the University of North Florida and a co-author of the study. “Given these gray areas, we wanted to examine what leads students to overrely on AI and the negative psychological consequences that may follow.”
Prior research on smartphones has documented a phenomenon called nomophobia, which is the anxiety people feel when they are separated from their mobile devices. The authors adapted this idea to modern technology, coining the term “noAIphobia” to describe the restlessness and anxiety students experience when they lose access to their usual digital assistants. NoAIphobia indicates a specific type of performance anxiety triggered by the absence of a tool a person has come to depend upon.
At the same time, the authors proposed that students might suffer from artificial intelligence use stigma. This stigma involves the fear of being judged negatively by peers or instructors, such as being viewed as lazy or unoriginal for relying on a computer program. The researchers aimed to map out how these different motivations and fears interact to influence whether a student continues to use the technology.
To explore these psychological dynamics, the researchers recruited 393 college students in the United States through an online survey platform. To participate, the students had to be currently enrolled in a college or university and must have used generative artificial intelligence tools for their schoolwork during the current semester. The average age of the participants was roughly 29 years old, and the group was almost evenly split between undergraduates and graduate students. About 54 percent of the participants were female.
The participants completed a detailed questionnaire designed to measure their motivations and psychological states. They rated a series of statements on a numbered scale to indicate how much they agreed or disagreed with various concepts. For instance, the survey measured efficiency expectancy, which is the belief that the technology saves time and effort. It also measured quality expectancy, or the belief that the tool will improve a student’s grades and the overall quality of their work.
Another concept measured in the survey was competitive conformity. This term refers to a student’s tendency to adopt the same behaviors as their classmates simply to avoid being at a competitive disadvantage. The researchers also used specific questionnaires to gauge the students’ levels of artificial intelligence dependence, their feelings of noAIphobia, their concerns about academic integrity, and their fears of social stigma. Finally, the survey asked how likely the students were to continue using these tools in the future.
The scientists analyzed the survey responses using advanced statistical modeling to map out the relationships between all these different factors. The analysis revealed that the fear of falling behind peers was the strongest predictor of artificial intelligence dependence. Competitive conformity outweighed practical motivations, such as wanting to save time or wanting to produce better work. When students believed their classmates were gaining academic advantages through artificial intelligence, they felt pressured to rely on the technology themselves so they would not be left at a disadvantage.
The researchers also found that expecting the tools to save time and effort was a stronger predictor of dependence than expecting the tools to improve the actual quality of the work. This suggests that many students view these programs primarily as shortcuts rather than learning aids. Regardless of the initial motivation, high levels of dependence were linked to two opposing psychological states.
“The biggest takeaway is that student AI dependence is not simply about laziness; it is also social and anxiety-driven,” Lee told PsyPost. “We found that students are caught in a psychological dilemma. On one side, they experience ‘noAIphobia,’ an anxiety in which they feel incapable of completing their work if they lose access to AI. On the other side, they face ‘AI use stigma,’ the social concern that others will view them as lazy or cheating.”
Students who were highly dependent on artificial intelligence tended to experience significant noAIphobia. The thought of completing schoolwork without their digital assistants made them feel nervous and uneasy. This deprivation anxiety was strongly associated with a desire to keep using the tools. The students essentially wanted to maintain their access to avoid the psychological discomfort of working without the programs.
On the other hand, dependence also predicted higher levels of artificial intelligence use stigma. The more a student relied on the technology, the more they worried about being labeled as a cheater by their peers and professors. This fear of social judgment was associated with a decreased intention to continue using the tools, creating a psychological conflict for the student.
“We believe that AI’s long-term deskilling effect may manifest as noAIphobia,” Lee added. “One interesting finding from this study is that noAIphobia is positively correlated with students’ intention to continue using AI. At the same time, social concerns about AI use appear as AI use stigma, which is negatively related to students’ intention to continue using AI.”
The authors noted that a student’s personal concern for academic integrity acted as a magnifying glass for this stigma. For students who worried deeply about educational ethics and the rules of cheating, the relationship between their technological dependence and their feelings of shame was significantly stronger. These highly ethical students felt the burden of the stigma much more intensely than those who were less concerned about academic rules.
“The study suggests that students are not simply taking the easy way out by using AI,” Lee explained. “Rather, it reflects a real psychological dilemma that many college students experience.”
The study provides an informative look at modern educational technology, but it does have some limitations. The research relied on a single survey given at one specific point in time. Because of this design, the researchers cannot prove a strict cause-and-effect relationship between the variables.
“This is not a longitudinal study or an experimental design; it is a one-time survey,” Lee noted. “Therefore, readers should be cautious when interpreting the direction of causality.” It is possible that the psychological states and the technological dependence feed into each other in a continuous loop, rather than operating in a straight line.
The sample of students was also gathered through a specific online survey panel, which means the results might not perfectly represent every college student across the country or the globe. Future research could track students over several months or years to see how these dependencies and anxieties develop over time. Tracking behavior longitudinally would help scientists understand if these feelings of stigma eventually fade as the technology becomes even more normalized in society.
Future studies could expand beyond just academic tasks to see if these same psychological patterns hold true when people use artificial intelligence for personal entertainment or creative hobbies. Investigating whether this dependence eventually degrades a student’s actual critical thinking or problem-solving skills would also provide a more complete picture of the technology’s long-term impacts. Examining both the cognitive costs and the emotional costs is necessary for a full understanding of the technology.
In the meantime, the researchers suggest that universities need to create specific and transparent policies regarding acceptable artificial intelligence use. Establishing firm boundaries could help reduce the stigma and ethical confusion students currently face. Providing this structural support might minimize the psychological distress associated with these modern academic tools.
