The USB Type-C hardware interface and the USB4 specification were supposed to address a long-running problem with USB — inconsistency. When you picked up a USB cable, you never knew what you were going to get. The USB Implementers Forum (USB IF), responsible for building and maintaining the standard, named and re-named USB generations repeatedly. The convoluted naming scheme made things worse, not better. USB Type-C and USB4 had the lofty goal of finally changing that, but they fell short.
