New research suggests that unintentionally losing focus, known as spontaneous mind wandering, predicts distinct aspects of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder in adults. The findings indicate that both a general tendency to experience unintentional mind wandering and real-time performance drops during these episodes are linked to higher levels of inattentive and hyperactive traits. The study was published in Journal of Attention Disorders.
Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, or ADHD, is a neurodevelopmental condition characterized by patterns of inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsive behaviors that interfere with daily functioning. To understand how attention lapses happen, scientists often look at the default mode network. This is a network of brain regions that typically becomes active during rest or internal thought and tends to decrease in activity when a person engages in a demanding task requiring focus on the outside world.
Mind wandering occurs when a person’s attention shifts away from the task at hand and turns toward internal, unrelated thoughts. Historically, mind wandering was treated as a single concept, but recent evidence suggests it is multidimensional. Deliberate mind wandering is an intentional shift of thought, which can be adaptive for planning, recalling past experiences, or creative problem-solving. Spontaneous mind wandering is an intrusive, unintentional drift of thought that frequently disrupts a person’s ability to complete ongoing tasks.
The distinction between intentional and unintentional focus loss is a growing area of psychological research. For instance, a study covered by PsyPost in 2016 demonstrated that people tend to engage in intentional mind wandering during easy tasks but experience higher levels of unintentional mind wandering during difficult tasks. Another study covered by PsyPost in 2016 proposed that spontaneous thought is linked to reduced activity in cognitive control networks. This provides a theoretical framework for viewing conditions like ADHD as natural extensions of standard variations in spontaneous thinking.
In addition, a 2026 study of adults with ADHD found that a subjective feeling that one’s attention has drifted off task, even without remembering the specific thoughts, is associated with poorer attention and lower well-being. This highlights the complex ways off-task thoughts interfere with daily life.
“Executive function deficits have long been considered a core mechanism underlying the symptoms of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), including inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity,” Takehiro Minamoto, an associate professor of psychology at Shimane University, told PsyPost. “However, emerging evidence suggests that spontaneous mind wandering, the unintentional intrusion of task-unrelated thoughts, may also play a critical role in ADHD symptomatology.”
“This raised an important question about how spontaneous mind wandering contributes to ADHD symptoms, prompting us to investigate the underlying mechanisms using methods developed in psychological research,” Minamoto explained. Building on this background, the research team sought to examine how intentional and unintentional mind wandering relate to ADHD symptoms by directly measuring people’s performance during these specific mental states.
The research team recruited 67 university students. Several days before the main experiment, the participants completed self-report questionnaires to measure their ADHD symptoms and their general tendencies to engage in both deliberate and spontaneous mind wandering in daily life. The participants also completed a working memory test to ensure general intellectual ability was accounted for and did not skew the results.
During a later session, the participants completed a modified counting Stroop task on a computer. In this test, participants saw groups of Japanese words that spelled out numbers, but the meaning of the word never matched the actual number of words shown on the screen. For example, the word “four” might be written two times. Participants had to press a keyboard key corresponding to the number of words, ignoring what the text actually said. The task was long and demanding, consisting of 1,152 trials. To prevent participants from guessing or falling into a physical rhythm, the correct response key changed on every single trial.
To track mind wandering, the researchers randomly paused the task 40 times. During these pauses, they presented a prompt asking participants to classify their attention at that exact moment. Participants could report being fully concentrated, engaging in deliberate mind wandering, experiencing spontaneous mind wandering, or dealing with other distractions.
Deliberate mind wandering was defined as thinking of a strategy or intentionally thinking about unrelated things without affecting performance. Spontaneous mind wandering was defined as unintentional thoughts that affected performance or the mind simply wandering off. Eight participants were excluded for various reasons, such as not reporting any mind wandering at all, leaving 59 participants in the final analysis.
The researchers found that participants engaged in deliberate mind wandering more frequently than spontaneous mind wandering. Despite being less frequent, spontaneous mind wandering had a much more negative impact on task performance. When participants reported spontaneous mind wandering, their accuracy was lower, their response times were slower, and their reaction times varied more wildly compared to periods when they reported deliberate mind wandering. The drop in accuracy during spontaneous mind wandering showed a moderate effect size, highlighting a distinct behavioral difference between intentional and unintentional attention shifts.
When looking at ADHD traits, the data indicated that two different measures of spontaneous mind wandering independently predicted higher ADHD symptom scores. First, participants who scored higher on the self-report scale for spontaneous mind wandering in daily life tended to have higher ADHD symptom scores. Second, participants who had poorer real-time accuracy specifically during spontaneous mind wandering episodes in the counting task also tended to have higher ADHD symptom scores. The deliberate mind wandering scale and accuracy during deliberate mind wandering did not predict ADHD scores at all.
Because the self-report scale and the real-time accuracy metric did not overlap in their predictive power, the authors propose that people with ADHD traits might suffer from two different types of interference. The self-report scale captures macroscopic interference, where individuals struggle generally in daily life because they are frequently distracted by unrelated thoughts. The task accuracy metric captures microscopic interference, meaning that when these individuals do experience a spontaneous thought, they have a much harder time coping with the immediate distraction and making the correct decision in the moment.
“Our findings suggest that spontaneous mind wandering may contribute to ADHD symptoms through at least two distinct mechanisms,” Minamoto noted. “One appears to reflect a persistent tendency for task-unrelated thoughts to interfere with attention and self-regulation, while the other reflects momentary disruptions in the ability to switch between mental states and maintain focus.”
“This highlights that attentional difficulties in ADHD may not arise from a single underlying process, but from multiple forms of cognitive interference that affect everyday functioning,” he added.
These results align with research covered by PsyPost in 2022, which found that mind wandering heavily disrupts attention and productivity in children with ADHD, though the new study specifically utilized adult self-reports and real-time cognitive testing rather than childhood classroom observations. The findings are also in line with a 2024 study covered by PsyPost indicating that excessive mind wandering is linked to ADHD symptoms in adults. It is worth noting that the earlier research focused on clinically diagnosed patients rather than a general student sample.
As with all research, there are a few things to keep in mind. The sample consisted entirely of university students, none of whom had a formal clinical diagnosis of ADHD. While a portion of the participants scored high enough on the symptom scale to warrant clinical evaluation, the results might look different in a formally diagnosed population.
Additionally, the structure of the counting Stroop task required participants to use different fingers to press alternating keys. The physical distance between these keys varied randomly on the keyboard, which might have obscured deeper connections between mind wandering and the raw speed of response times. Future studies could use tasks with simpler motor requirements to better capture how reaction speeds relate to attention lapses. Because the study measured traits at a single point in time, it cannot determine whether spontaneous mind wandering directly causes ADHD symptoms or if the condition leads to a higher frequency of mind wandering.
“Our next step is to conduct further studies to confirm the two potential forms of interference associated with spontaneous mind wandering and to better understand their underlying neural mechanisms,” Minamoto said. “In the long term, we hope this line of research will inform the development of more targeted behavioral, cognitive, and pharmacological interventions to help alleviate the challenges experienced by people with ADHD.”
