People process social information in distinct cognitive steps before acting aggressively. These mental pathways differ depending on whether the aggression is an impulsive reaction or a calculated act. A study published in Deviant Behavior reveals that an individual’s confidence in their ability to lash out is linked to impulsive aggression, while the expectation of a reward relates to planned aggression.
To understand how people navigate social conflict, psychologists rely on a framework called the Social Information Processing model. This model breaks down real-time social interactions into a sequence of rapid mental events. Individuals must progress through each stage to produce a response to their environment.
The process begins with encoding social cues, such as noticing a person’s tone of voice or facial expression. Next, the individual interprets those cues, deciding whether the other person’s behavior was accidental or intentional. The person then clarifies their own goals for the interaction, such as maintaining peace or establishing dominance. Finally, they access possible behavioral responses from memory, evaluate the potential outcomes of those responses, and enact a chosen behavior.
Over the years, psychologists have updated the classic cognitive framework to include emotional regulation. For example, individuals in a state of anger may selectively focus on mood-congruent information, ignoring peaceful cues in their environment. Anger can also energize specific goals, pushing a person to prioritize revenge over conflict resolution. Later updates distinguish between automatic processing, which facilitates impulsive actions, and reflective processing, which allows for deliberate behavioral strategies.
Psychologists classify aggressive behavior into two main categories based on its function. Reactive aggression is an impulsive, defensive, and often emotional response to a perceived threat or provocation. Proactive aggression is a deliberate, goal-oriented behavior executed without prior provocation. Someone might use proactive aggression to gain social status, extract a tangible reward, or assert dominance over another person.
Past research consistently links biases in the early steps of cognitive processing to reactive aggression. For example, a tendency to interpret ambiguous actions as hostile often precedes a retaliatory outburst. Biases in the later steps, such as expecting a positive outcome from a harmful act, typically correlate with proactive aggression.
When researchers do study adult populations, they generally focus on just one cognitive step at a time, such as hostile attribution bias. Existing studies also rarely distinguish between the distinct functions of adult aggression. Additionally, few projects examine whether men and women rely on different mental pathways when deciding to act aggressively.
Mariana Sebastião Machado, a researcher at the University of Porto in Portugal, wanted to test the entire six-step cognitive model in adults. Along with colleagues Josefina Castro and Carla Sofia Cardoso, Machado aimed to identify which specific mental steps predict distinct types of aggression. They also sought to uncover potential differences in how male and female minds process social conflict.
To investigate this, the researchers recruited 278 adults from Portugal to complete an online survey. The participants first answered a standardized questionnaire measuring their history of reactive and proactive aggressive behaviors. The sample consisted predominantly of highly educated individuals, and the majority were female.
Next, the participants read four short fictional scenarios describing socially ambiguous situations. In each story, the reader experiences an adverse action from another person without an obvious motive. Participants then answered a series of questions designed to map onto the different stages of mental processing.
They rated whether they believed the fictional offender had hostile intentions, testing the early interpretation phase of the cognitive model. They also evaluated how good it would be to respond aggressively and what results they might expect from doing so. Finally, they rated how easy they would find it to execute an aggressive response and the likelihood that they would actually lash out.
The survey results showed that reactive and proactive aggression are strongly correlated, meaning people who engage in one type often engage in the other. However, the underlying cognitive habits linked to each behavior proved distinct. The habit of assuming others have bad intentions uniquely aligned with impulsive, reactive aggression. Hostile attribution did not correlate with planned, proactive aggression.
Meanwhile, the later stages of cognitive processing related to both types of aggressive behavior. To isolate the strongest factors, the researchers ran statistical models that filtered out the overlap between the two aggression categories. This analysis revealed that a person’s belief in their ability to easily execute an aggressive act was the strongest independent factor associated with reactive aggression.
For proactive aggression, the expectation that lashing out would yield positive results emerged as the strongest independent predictor. The overall amount of aggressive behavior reported did not show a statistically significant difference between men and women. Yet, the specific mental pathways driving their behaviors diverged in measurable ways.
Men generally evaluated aggressive responses more positively than women and expected better outcomes from acting out. In statistical models analyzing only the male participants, expecting a positive reward strongly predicted proactive aggression. The tendency to perceive hostility in others showed a borderline relationship with reactive aggression in men.
For the female participants, simply believing an aggressive response was an acceptable choice predicted higher levels of proactive aggression. Reactive aggression in women presented a mixed mental state. A high confidence in their ability to act out predicted reactive aggression, but this was paired with a negative judgment of the aggressive act itself.
The researchers suggest this opposing dynamic in women might reflect divergent social conditioning. Society often treats male aggression as normal or interprets it as a sign of strength. Conversely, female aggression is frequently stigmatized or viewed as a deviation from social expectations. This stigma may create an internal conflict for women between their capacity to retaliate and their moral restraint.
The study relies on data collected at a single point in time. These cross-sectional findings highlight associations but cannot prove cause and effect. Participants also self-reported their behaviors, which can introduce bias if individuals downplay their aggression to appear more socially acceptable.
The scenarios used to test cognitive processing placed the reader in the position of a victim. This framing naturally provokes defensive emotions and a desire to retaliate. The survey design might explain why early mental steps linked more robustly to reactive aggression, as the scenarios offered little room for calculating, unprovoked action.
Finally, the participant group consisted mostly of college-educated adults under the age of thirty. Social knowledge, emotional regulation, and interpersonal goals evolve as people grow older. The cognitive processes observed in this sample might not generalize to older demographics or populations with different educational backgrounds.
Future research will need to include older and more diverse populations to see if these patterns hold steady. Scientists could also use laboratory tasks to observe aggressive behavior as it happens in real time. Such methods would provide an accurate picture of how momentary thoughts translate into physical actions.
